Lyrics of Resist and Bite by Sabaton

War is coming swiftly
The borders closing in
We’re a company of soldiers
Mere forty rifles strong

All alone
Stand alone

Ardenner ground is burning,
And rommel is at hand
As the blitzkrieg’s pushing harder
The war is all around!

All around
Hold your ground

Fight all eighteen days of battles,
No odds are on our side
Few will fight for all until the bullets are gone

We, we will resist and bite!
Bite hard
‘Cause we are all in sight
We, we take up arms and fight!
Fight hard!
Resist and do what’s right!

No matter our fighting
The numbers will still count
We’re outgunned and few in numbers
We’re doomed to flag of fail

We fought hard
Held our guard
But when captured by the Axis
And forced to tell the truth
We’ll tell it with a smile,
We will surprise them with a laugh

We are all
We were all

We were told to hold the border
And that is what we did
Honored were our orders
In despite of our foe

We, we will resist and bite!
Bite hard
‘Cause we are all in sight
We, we take up arms and fight!
Fight hard!
Resist and do what’s right

Gloria fortis miles
The Wehrmacht closing in
Adversor et admorsus
The boar against the Eagle
Gloria fortis miles
The Wehrmacht closing in
Adversor et admorsus
The boar against the Eagle

We, we will resist and bite!
Bite hard
‘Cause we are all in sight
We, we take up arms and fight!
Fight hard!
Resist and do what’s right

Historical Background

In short: The song is about Belgian resistance against the Wehrmacht in the Ardennes Offensive in World War II.

Resist and Bite – The Belgian Last Stand

Some soldiers fight for victory. Others fight because it’s the only thing left to do.

Resist and Bite by Sabaton tells the incredible story of the Chasseurs Ardennais—a small Belgian unit that held back thousands of German troops during the Battle of Belgium in 1940.

May 1940 – Germany Invades Belgium

“War is coming swiftly, the borders closing in.”

On May 10, 1940, Germany launched Fall Gelb (Case Yellow)—the invasion of Belgium, the Netherlands, and France.

  • The German Wehrmacht used Blitzkrieg tactics, moving with speed and overwhelming firepower.
  • Belgium’s Chasseurs Ardennais were light infantry trained for defending the forests of the Ardennes.
  • Their task? Delay the Germans long enough for the French and British to set up defenses.

“We’re a company of soldiers, mere forty rifles strong.”

At the village of Bodange, one company of 40 Chasseurs faced thousands of advancing German troops.

The Battle – A Doomed Defense

“Ardenner ground is burning, and Rommel is at hand.”

The Chasseurs Ardennais faced Erwin Rommel’s 7th Panzer Division—one of the deadliest armored units in the war.

“Fight all eighteen days of battles, no odds are on our side.”

Though vastly outnumbered and outgunned, the Belgians refused to surrender.

  • They destroyed German tanks using outdated 47mm anti-tank guns.
  • They ambushed enemy forces, forcing them to halt and reorganize.
  • Even as they ran out of bullets, they continued to fight with bayonets and captured weapons.

“We, we will resist and bite! Bite hard ’cause we are all in sight.”

Capture – But No Surrender

“But when captured by the Axis, and forced to tell the truth, we’ll tell it with a smile, we will surprise them with a laugh.”

After 18 days of resistance, Belgium surrendered on May 28, 1940.

  • The Chasseurs Ardennais had inflicted heavy losses on the Germans.
  • When captured, they mocked their captors, refusing to give them any respect.
  • Their defiance earned them the admiration of even their enemies.

“The boar against the eagle.”

The boar was the symbol of the Chasseurs Ardennais, while the eagle represented Nazi Germany.

Even in defeat, these Belgian soldiers showed the world what it meant to fight with honor.

The Lesson?

Some soldiers fight for victory. Others fight to show the world that they will never surrender.

And in May 1940, the Chasseurs Ardennais proved that sometimes, resistance itself is a victory.
